Best Friends National Conference side trips

Sticking around after the conference? On Sunday morning, we’re offering side trips to Dallas Animal Services and Spay Neuter Network to learn about their lifesaving programs. Please choose which of the trips you’d like to join and sign up when you register for the conference.

Cost is $30 per person and the registration fee includes transportation. Buses will pick you up at the Tower entrance to the Hilton Anatole and will return you to the same spot. Other details will be sent a few weeks before the conference.

Please note: Space is limited for each trip, so be sure to sign up early. Once a trip is filled, registrants will be put on a wait list and notified via email if/when an available spot becomes open.

Tour of Dallas Animal Services (90-minute tour)

Join us for a trip to Dallas Animal Services, the fourth largest dog and cat intake facility in the country. Annually, DAS takes in more than 34,000 pets. When DAS first opened in 2007, the live release rate was 12.3 percent. In 2018, that number rose to 81.1 percent and earlier this year, DAS achieved a live release rate of more than 90 percent, finally achieving no-kill status.

During the tour, you’ll learn about the challenges DAS staff face, including dealing with a growing loose-dog problem in the region, along with intense media scrutiny. We’ll visit the facility’s dog play group space, which allows play-group-eligible dogs to get outside and frolic five days a week, improving their quality of life and providing enrichment. You’ll also learn firsthand the many ways that DAS continues to work to improve the lives of the animals in their care.

Tour of Spay Neuter Network (60-minute tour)

Spay Neuter Network’s mission is to “eliminate pet overpopulation through spay/neuter while empowering communities to care responsibly for dogs and cats.” SNN offers free and affordable high-volume spay/neuter, and wellness and vaccine services for dogs and cats in north Texas. SNN alter more than 30,000 animals per year.

Our tour will include SNN’s Buckner Boulevard clinic in Dallas (there are also clinics in Crandall and Ft. Worth, Texas, which will not be on the tour) and the Hope Mobile, a large mobile animal surgical hospital. During the tour, you’ll get an up-close-and-personal look at how a modest grassroots organization can have an incredible lifesaving impact on its community.
