Animal internships and other intern opportunities

Best Friends Animal Society offers a variety of internship opportunities for those interested in gaining hands-on experience with animal care or those looking to gain experience in the field of animal welfare in various capacities outside of direct animal care. Internships are offered at our Sanctuary in Southern Utah and around the United States.

Volunteer (unpaid) internships for college students and people pursuing animal careers

Best Friends internships are open to college students, undergraduate (including freshman) and graduate students, as are other candidates who have equivalent life and work experience with animals and those looking to make a career change. Intern programs are open to people ages 20 and over.

Animal Care Internships – Kanab, Utah (Sanctuary)

Gain hands-on experience working with animals at our Sanctuary in Kanab, in Southern Utah! Best Friends currently offers two animal care internship programs with sessions available throughout the year, including the summer.

  • General Animal Care Internship - 5 Week Program:

Our General Animal Care Internship is a 5-week program for people who are interested in hands-on work with animals in a sanctuary setting.  Interns spend one week in each of the following animal areas: Dogtown, Cat World, Horses/Pigs, Parrots, and Rabbits. Participating in the daily routine of the sanctuary gives interns an excellent opportunity to learn about animal care, socialization of animals, animal behavior and animal rescue.

The species specific internship programs at Best Friends Animal Society are designed to provide participants a comprehensive, hands-on experience with a designated species (presently offered in dogs, cats, and parrots). There are specific learning objectives and there is a syllabus outlining tasks and competencies for each of the animal areas. Interns will be involved in all aspects of the day to day activities and overall operations of their animal area.

    Please note:

    • All internships with dogs are 12 weeks (3 months). Please see the link below for dates and indicate the session you are applying for on your application.
